More than 1,600 homes and businesses in New Brunswick are waking up without power this morning, out of which almost 60 have been in the dark since last week’s ice storm. According to NB Power officials, majority of these customers are located in the Charlotte County area and are expected to be reconnected by the end of the day. Whereas, the latest of the bulk outages occurred in Tracadie, though there is no speculation about how long it will take for them to be back online.
In a statement issued by the President and CEO of NB Power, Gaëtan Thomas, he alleged that it’s too early to begin calculating the cost of repairs and equipment damage. He revealed that more than 250 crews are planned to work around the clock to restore power. Furthermore, Thomas alleged that the utility has faced difficulties in explaining to people why it has taken so long. He aimed that once everyone is reconnected, the utility will look at ways to improve communication with customers.
Sharing his concerns, Mr. Thomas alleged that “you know, people don’t believe a storm like this can occur until it does occur. And we’ve also learned that more geomatics on the website would be useful to be able to explain where and why, you know, one side of the street has power and the other side doesn’t.” He alleged that NB Power will be enlisting its customers’ cellphone numbers on record, because most people were calling the utility to report outages from their cellphones and it created confusion. It was added that “so these are simple little things that we can improve on — having people’s cellphones attached to their accounts.”
