While the majority of Canada’s premiers and territorial leaders who had gathered for an annual meeting decided to unanimously convince the federal government to value their opinion more while making changes to programs that affect them, like jobs training and health care, the efforts of Saskatchewan’s premier were not taken as seriously when he called for support to abolish the Senate during the premiers conference.

Speaking on the matter while at a working breakfast during the meeting on Friday, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne stated that “it’s not something that is top of mind for people in Ontario.” She admitted that Premier Brad Wall raised the issue in front of all leaders on the last day of the premiers’ conference, but there was “no more discussion other than that.” On the other hand, Wall commented that different premiers have different positions regarding the Senate abolishment issue though “it’s not a top priority for Saskatchewan, the premiers or the country.” Wall mentioned in a statement that “there are other issues including the economy and health care, and you know frankly disasters that are happening that are more important.”

Meanwhile, the RCMP has been investigating the decision of PM Harper’s former chief of staff, Nigel Wright, to lend Senator Mike Duffy $90,000 in order to pay off his ineligible housing expenses. Upon inquiry about his comments on the Senate abolishment in light of the scandal surrounding Duffy, senator representing P.E.I., Ghiz joked that “I thought he was an Ontario senator.”
