James Allison returns to Mercedes Formula 1 Racing Team
Mercedes has announced the immediate return of James Allison as the technical director in charge of the Formula 1 racing team. Allison previously led the team to several successful seasons with Lewis Hamilton at the helm. He takes over the position from Mike Elliott, whose responsibility was the lackluster Formula 1 cars of 2022 and 2023.
Elliott found that he lacked the skills required for the day-to-day development of the car, a task that Allison is well-suited for. Hence, both engineers decided to switch positions, allowing Allison to take up a more hands-on role in the development of the Formula 1 car.
Allison’s Impressive Racing Career
As a successful engineer, James Allison has an impressive resume when it comes to racing. He was involved in the Michael Schumacher era of Ferrari and played a crucial role in the championships won by Fernando Alonso and Renault. Additionally, Allison was the technical director at Mercedes from 2017 to 2021, where the team dominated the racing scene.
Elliott Takes on Long-Term Technical Structure of the Team
Mike Elliott, who succeeded Allison, will take on the long-term technical structure of the Mercedes racing team. By focusing on this aspect of the team, he aims to bring more sustainable success in the future. The upcoming Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola in May is expected to see major updates to the W14.
