Hungary raising concerns to Sweden’s NATO bid
Sweden’s NATO membership is being impeded by Hungary, which has not yet approved the country’s accession. Hungary is unhappy with Sweden’s criticism of Prime Minister Orbán’s policies and wants to discuss these issues with Stockholm before voting. Hungary and Turkey are the only NATO countries that have not yet agreed to Sweden’s accession.
According to Orbán’s spokesman, Sweden has been hostile to Hungary for years, and its criticism of Hungary’s rule of law would harm Hungarian interests. The freezing of billions in EU aid to Budapest due to alleged violations of the rule of law and democracy is also blamed on a number of Swedish politicians by Orbán’s party.
Finland is closer to joining NATO than Sweden, with Hungary having already given the green light for Finnish accession. Turkish President Erdogan no longer objects to Finnish accession, but there is no clear timeline for the Turkish parliament to vote on it.
Turkey has not yet approved Sweden’s accession because it wants Sweden to take tougher action against Kurdish organizations such as the PKK and YPG.
