TikTok can expect a ban in EU
Failure to comply with European conditions could result in a ban for TikTok, according to a group of MEPs, led in part by Dutchman Bart Groothuis. Groothuis, a member of the commission against foreign interference, believes TikTok and other Chinese tech companies could be used by China to influence elections.
However, TikTok’s top European lobbyist, Theo Bertram, has stated the company is willing to explain itself, and parent company ByteDance is largely owned by non-Chinese investors. While Groothuis believes ownership structures should be adjusted, he is not advocating for a complete ban, but does believe other Chinese companies pose a greater risk, such as Nuctech, which supplies technology to many EU member states.
