Singer Bobby Caldwell dies at 71

Mary, the wife of Bobby Caldwell, a singer-songwriter who excelled in various music genres, announced on Tuesday that he had passed away at the age of 71. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed, but his wife revealed that he suffered from fluoroquinolone toxicity, a side effect of an antibiotic he took in 2017 for a minor illness. The drug caused severe damage to his body, which was irreversible.

In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration warned against the use of fluoroquinolones to treat non-serious bacterial infections due to their disabling side effects. The warning labels were updated in 2013 to include the possibility of permanent nerve damage from the drug. Cipro, a type of quinolone antibiotics, is a well-known brand name for consumers.

Caldwell’s musical talent was evident in his ability to create hits in multiple genres, including jazz and R&B, ensuring the longevity of his catalog. In 1997, Boyz II Men sampled his song “What You Won’t Do for Love” for their hit “To the Limit,” almost two decades after the original release. In the 1990s, rapper Biggie Smalls also sampled Caldwell’s “My Flame” in his song “Sky’s the Limit,” which was later featured in a biopic about Smalls’ life and career.

Caldwell lived in New Jersey and is survived by his wife and daughters.
