Putin to meet Syrian leader Assad in Moscow
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Syrian leader Bashar Assad in the Kremlin to discuss the reconstruction of Syria following a devastating civil war and improving relations with Turkey.
The two leaders will focus on the importance of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and their meeting coincides with the anniversary of Syria’s 12-year uprising-turned-civil war. Since 2015, Russia has been supporting Assad’s government in its fight against armed opposition groups and has maintained a military presence in Syria.
Russia has also helped repair Syria’s relations with regional powers and is mediating talks between Turkey and Syria. The issue of Syrian-Turkish relations is expected to be on the agenda. Additionally, deputy foreign ministers from Syria, Turkey, Russia, and Iran are expected to discuss counterterrorism efforts in Syria in Moscow on Wednesday and Thursday.
